The history of Raleigh Bicycle Company began back in 1887 on Raleigh Street in Nottingham, when Frank Bowden bought himself a bicycle made by Woodhead, Anguyce and Ellis.
Frank Bowden was impressed by the well-coordinated work of the best bicycle in the world and went to Raleigh Street in search of masters.
It turned out that Woodhead, Angeyce and Ellis were producing three bicycles a week, so Bowden decided to make them an offer to buy their business.
Soon, production expanded, as a result of which the entrepreneur began to look for a new building and moved his factory to a 4-storey building located on Russell Street.
However, he kept the name in memory of the former location of the enterprise - Raleigh Cycles.
In just six years, Bowden managed to create a company that became the largest and most advanced bicycle manufacturer in the world.
The company's factory was located on an area of 7.5 acres in the Faraday Road area (town of Lenton, independent territory of Nottingham).
In 1979, the production of the company reached its peak - during that year, 10 thousand units of equipment were produced.
In 1982, the Huffy Corporation acquired the distribution rights for Raleigh-branded products in the United States.
Based on the agreement signed by the manufacturers, Raleigh bicycles were sold under the Huffy brand in stores in the United States of America, while the name remained the same in the rest of the world.
In 1987, Derby International acquired the manufacturing and marketing rights for Raleigh bicycles in the United States from Huffy.
